Devilish Divas and Queer Crossovers Abound as Glitterjaw Celebrates Pride Month!
A recap of Pride at Glitterjaw.
It should come as no surprise to anyone that June was, without a doubt, one of the busiest months at Glitterjaw—and each show celebrated Pride Month in their own way.
Here at the Collective, Pride also ushered in a spirit of collaboration as, all across Glitterjaw, hosts left the comfort of their typical recording studios and joined fellow creators to discuss queer movies, books, video games and more.
Be not afraid—it’s just some devilish divas and a whole lot of crossovers for Pride Month!
The spirit of proud collaboration was no more exemplified than during Fear Coded: A Queer Horror Podcast’s Devilish Diva Month, where all Pride Month long, Tyler, Merrilee, and David took on some of the most iconic divas in film…with the help of some iconic divas across the Glitterjaw Collective.
First up, Chels Eichholz (Q Division, And A Rewatch Podcast) kicked off Devilish Diva Month with a bang, discussing divas Bette Davis and Joan Crawford in 1962’s Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?
Tommy Proffitt (Distant Echoes, Lee Carvallo’s Podding Challenge) grabbed the mic the following week to talk variable penis sizes, tennis, and, of course, divas Cher, Susan Sarandon, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Veronica Cartwright in 1987’s The Witches of Eastwick.
Taking over diva duties next, Gavin Mevius (Mixed Reviews, Q Division) and the Fear Coded crew gushed over Meryl Streep, Goldie Hawn, and Isabella Rossellini in 1992’s classic Death Becomes Her.
And finally, to close out this devilish crossover series, diva Doug Fink (Falling with Style, Novel Gaming, Walloping Websnappers, Skreeonk!) stopped by the studio to discuss The Substance’s divas Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley.
More queer episodes and crossovers around Glitterjaw
Are You My Mother? slayed the month of June, featuring two incredible mothers with the help of some equally incredible guests. First up, Doug Fink joined to discuss DreamWorks’ tear jerker of an animated film, The Wild Robot and the mechanical mother within, Roz. Later in the month, David traded out the tissues for holy water and stakes as Christian joined to discuss the mother of everyone’s favorite vampire slayer, Joyce Summers from Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Lee Carvallo’s Podding Challenge invited their good pal and one of the hosts of Fear Coded, Merrilee O’Neil, to their Treehouse to tell scary stories as they discussed The Simpsons: Night of the Living Treehouse of Horror. Plus the trio took on a brief history of the Treehouse of Horror series, shared their favorite moments, and briefly waxed poetic about the gaming industry moving away from physical manuals.
Distant Echoes: A Star Wars Podcast broke down as they broke down the penultimate arc of Andor Season 2. Continuing to hammer home just how real this show is, Cass and Tommy discussed the rising tensions in Ghorman in episodes 7-9 and how it provides a mirror to the real world, from kettling protestors and the arrest of Senators to news media propagandizing for the government during genocides and police state crackdowns.
The Mixed Reviews celebrated the winner of this year’s May Madness: All Queer Edition, Lily Tomlin, by giving her the spotlight in their Pride Month episode! From Laugh In to Grandma, 9 to 5 to The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe, Luis and Gavin treated listeners to a thorough breakdown of her prolific, subversive, gay and political career.
Walloping Websnappers! thwipped up three more episodes of The Spectacular Spider-Man for listeners this month. In “Group Therapy,” Derek and Doug gush over this jaw-dropping episode that includes The Sinister Six. Then, in “Intervention,” the battle inside Peter’s mind gives a surreal, beautiful take on the classic Spidey origin while turning the symbiote story into a poignant metaphor for depression and mental health. And finally “Nature vs. Nurture,” closes out the season with a big gay bang as Peter has to fight his ex, Venom!
The Q Division initiated new agent Doug Fink as Doug continued his guest appearance tour throughout Glitterjaw shows this month. Together, Gavin, Chels, and Doug bonded over 1967’s Casino Royale, covering every queer nook and cranny the film has to offer, from lame gags and Orson Welles to Peter Sellers storming off set!
Novel Gaming! prided themselves on not just reading one book for this month’s book club, but reading several queer comics in Marvel’s Voices: Pride anthology series! For their game club episode earlier in the month, Katie and Doug dated all the dads in 2017’s Dream Daddy. And of course, they covered all the things they’re reading, playing, watching, and thinking about, including: Morphenomenal by Joshua Moore, Ori and the Blind Forest, Survivor, Dimension 20’s Cloudward, Ho and so much more!
Gimmicks put in work this month, releasing an episode every week! First, David and Derek got real about Frasier's fake clip show before doing the time warp with TGIF’s time-traveling crossover block. To finish off the month, Merrilee O’Neil made yet another guest appearance, this time discussing Black Mirror’s incredibly queer episode "San Junipero."
Skreeonk! went back to the 50s for the unbelievable flying squirrel himself, Varan, as Derek and Doug stomped through the cheap, made-for-tv movie Varan (1958)! Then, the duo took on the masterful sci-fi war film Atragon (1963), which includes an undersea empire full of bright wigs, a cat-eyed sea dragon named Manda, and a flying submarine. And to close out pride month, streamer and voice actor Lauren Goodnight joined to discuss monsters, dubs, and metal slug aliens disguised as eerie women in sequins who make us question our sexualities…and Destroy All Monsters (1968).
Falling with Style set their translators to podcast as they discussed yet another stunning Pixar world in the Communiverse—Elio! Derek and Doug reflected on queer readings of Elio’s and Glordon’s respective journeys, the best ways to name aliens in a sci-fi story, and the movie we almost got before reworks!
