Happening Now: The Mixed Reviews May Madness
The Mixed Reviews’ May Madness: All Queer Edition is back, back, back again! During the month of May, vote to determine which queer icon’s career Gavin and Louie will deep dive into for Pride Month this June! The matches are set:
Will it be the versatile designer-turned-director hitmaker of the 80s & 90s, Joel Schumacher?
Maybe it will be the metal bending, magic wielding, Shakespearean stage actor himself, Sir Ian McKellen.
Will McKellen’s X-Men costar and millennial film icon Elliot Page claim victory, or will he be defeated by the voice of Paddington and well-decorated force of British television, Ben Whishaw?
Returning to the tournament is Gregg Araki, director of numerous 90s & 00s queer cult classics, but to pull off the win he’ll need to overcome the overwhelming force of acclaimed character actor Sarah Paulson.

Here’s what we were up to last month!
Fear Coded celebrated April Fools by examining what makes horror comedy work. They kicked the month off with titan of the genre Ghostbusters, traveled through time to examine the gender politics in Army of Darkness, and turned things on their head to talk about subverting expectations in Tucker and Dale vs. Evil with Tommy Proffitt. They even solved a mystery over on their Patreon as they talked about 1985’s Clue.
It was all about Maul on Distant Echoes after they concluded a tournament of Maul’s iconic moments in preparation for a month devoted to the new Star Wars series, Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord.
It was a packed month for Gimmicks! They started by counting mistakes on The Drew Carey Show, rounded things out by watching a Modern Family “Zoom episode” well ahead of its time, and hosted a double feature of unexpected FOX crossovers along the way: an X-Files/COPS crossover with guest Tyler Watson and an America’s Most Wanted special featuring The Simpsons with guest Tommy Proffitt.
It’s the Skreeonk episode folks have been waiting for! Film critics Alonso Duralde and Dave White of Linoleum Knife Podcast joined the show to talk about Academy Award-winning period piece Godzilla Minus One. They also followed up their March Patreon coverage of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Season 1 with a bonus episode on the first half of Monarch Season 2.
April saw the debut of a new Bond for The Q Division. They welcomed award-winning composer Michael Llewelyn Barker to discuss Timothy Dalton’s first foray into the world of 007, 1987’s The Living Daylights.
Little Dead Aliens got stuck in the snow and stuck in space last month. Ben brought Steve Mowry from Comic Book Bears & Bear Cave of Terror to talk about “Ice” and the obvious comparisons to The Thing, and then gave his own spooky space recommendations alongside the episode “Space”.
After taking a detour to discuss The Simpsons Movie in March, Lee Carvallo’s Podding Challenge wrapped up their coverage of The Simpsons Game, the final Simpsons game released for traditional home consoles.
The Mixed Reviews were joined by festival programmer Austin King to deep dive into what makes Ethan Hawke a modern master. On Patreon, they released their very first movie commentary on Mrs. Doubtfire, and Gavin went to the movies to catch a screening of Over Your Dead Body.
Super Mario Moment concluded their third season in April, a season dedicated to every television and movie adaptation of our favorite Italian plumber, by discussing how The Super Mario Galaxy movie stacked up to its polarizing predecessor.
Nothing was more important than Otto Octavius last month as Walloping Websnappers continued discussing Spider-Man (2017)’s adaptation of The Superior Spider-Man comics. They also took a brief trip to the Andes Mountains with guest Tyler Watson in the Spider-Man (1967) episode “Cloud City of Gold”. On Patreon, they concluded their coverage of the new Ultimate Spider-Man (2024) comics.
The limits of romance were tested last month on Novel Gaming with their book club pick, The Sound of Stars by Alechia Dow, and Vicki returned to try out a new episode format to celebrate Earth Day.
